Anyone with a Scottish background has taken down the decorations, has done some spring-cleaning, and is all ready to welcome in the New Year. Called Hogmanay, it's a time for remembering and for celebrating and for welcoming in the new. A "first foot" is a part of the tradition...a gift brought into the house and a greeting and a sharing of food...to bring luck to the house in the New Year.
We are poised to enter 2020. In looking at history, it always seems that the first twenty years of a new millennium brought in the previous twenty with it...a mingling of old and new, while the signature of the new era ramped up. Perhaps 2020 will be the start of the "real 21st Century".
Robotics, AI growth and acceptance, the desire for virtual reality experiences, the speed of connectivity, the language of emojis (a shorthand beyond time zones and geography?)...in 2020, the new culture rushes on.
In the middle of the excitements of new discoveries, ways of being, it's ever more important to remember the way of kindness. Perhaps an interesting thing to do would be to study philosophy. To consider what great thinkers have shared, at various times, about what it means to be human.
A little light-hearted film to begin a New Year entertainment? Try Scottish director Bill Forsyth's Local Hero. Enjoy.
