Selling or buying on Salt Spring Island? Check out the Trust's RAR bylaw...be informed!

The RAR regulation (Riparian issues), brought into law at the provincial government level, and left to municipalities to further interpret, in their individual areas, is causing an opinion divide on Salt Spring.

It appears that the Trust on Salt Spring is extending their current development permit area bylaw, re preservation of fish habitat, to cover approximately 60% of the Island.

Please make sure you're informed as to what the local trust committee is proposing, what impact this may have on your particular property, and what the costs will be to you re development of your property should it fall within the boundaries of this newly expanded DPA (development permit area).

It's simply about information and understanding.

In this election year (civic election in the Fall), are the current trustees rushing this into law, without full and transparent explanation?

(These are the same trustees who espoused the "precautionary principle": take time, do nothing if uncertain of outcomes, in case the outcome is disastrous...this principle was meant to apply in a research lab, where microbes in the search for disease antidotes might conceivably get out of control. These trustees applied this scientific concept to land use issues).

Now, however, they appear to be rushing this DPA restrictive measure through, without real public presentation/discussion. The posting of a daytime meeting in the Trust office, where it would only be seen if one happened to go into the Trust office for some other reason, and discover it posted on the bulletin board there, is not good enough re disclosure.

Salt Spring Islanders are environmentally aware, and that's why most people choose to live here. Fish habitats are important to all Islanders.

The issue is simply that the local trustees have not presented their RAR interpretation clearly. As a property owner, it's essential that you understand the ramifications of what is proposed (and what is almost law), and that you understand the potential costs to you. As a property buyer, same thing: it's about information, clearly presented and transparent to the public.

This is important...apathy is no excuse.

Check it out, and be informed!

Enjoy the "art scene", on special Salt Spring Island!

"If you throw yourself into the adventure of life, you get something out of it"... a remark, in passing, by an artist.

Keeping that in mind, give yourself a treat, and wander our amazing galleries in Ganges Village: Steffich Fine Art Gallery, Gallery 8, Starfish Gallery, Pegasus Gallery, Jill Louise Campbell Gallery, Salt Spring Gallery of Fine Art.

The walls of coffee houses and restaurants also showcase artistic expression: Cafe Talia, TJ Beans, Salt Spring Roasting Company, Harbour House Hotel, Calvin's Bistro, Bocados Bistro.

Don't overlook the presentations at ArtSpring: Gallery and Lobby, both.

Rock Salt Cafe at the "south end" also showcases art, as does Frankly Scarlet in Ganges.

In the "summer season", ArtCraft at Mahon Hall is in session!

We haven't even mentioned the home studios...endlessly inspiring!

How lucky we are, on special Salt Spring Island!

Enjoy your exploring, of the artistic vision....

As Picasso promised: "Art washes the dust from one's Soul".

Oceanfront acreage, on Salt Spring Island, waiting for your dream home....

Property Photo

Here's a wonderful opportunity to own a 6 + acre oceanfront property, with 450 +/- feet of easy access beachfront, on special Salt Spring Island!

Sunny (e/s/sw exposures), private, quiet, in an area of fine homes (estate style properties), close to all services/amenities, and yet wonderfully "apart", in its own serene world, this land has drilled well in place, a roughed in driveway to good building site choices, and the land is zoned for main home, plus separate guest cottage, plus separate studio.

Expanisive panoramic views of ocean, islands, mountains!

Share in park reserve (only 5 oceanfront acreages in this bare land strata, plus two oceanview lots), plus boat launch/beach area.

A "south end" gem!     Bring your architect, and let's walk this one, soon.

Radio show fun continues...live every Monday & Wednesday, 7 to 9 a.m., Pacific Time.

Am enjoying the live radio show that I do every Monday and Wednesday (7 to 9 a.m., Pacific Time), on the new community radio station (107.9 fm if you can hear it that way, or, www.cfsi-fm.com, via streaming audio.    Just click on the 'playing now' highlighted text, below the Salt Spring photograph).

I've been doing this, now, since mid-September, 2009, and find it very interesting and also a lot of fun.    It's called All Things Salt Spring, and my producer is Dave Gordon.    It's a mix of Salt Spring events, interviews, music that appeals to myself and to Dave, and "just thoughts"....not about real estate!

Hope you will tune in, if you haven't done so already, and comments/critiques are always welcome.     The show is live, so I don't hear myself!

Podcasts of some of my interviews can be found, though, on my website at: www.liread.com/radio.htm

So lucky to live on this eclectic and vibrant Island!

Hmmm....our own money (legal tender, can be spent on the Island, and is designed by artists), our own flag (green on one end, blue on the other, the middle white with the Canadian red Maple Leaf on it), our own airline (Salt Spring Air), now our own radio station....hmmm....seceding to be a tax free haven is next???

Salt Spring Island oceanview beauty, "step in ready" for your new lifestyle!

Property Photo

Looking for a blend of grandeur and style, meshed with rural charm?    Here it is!

The stone work on this formal entry is locally created, and the builder is a designer / contractor, who has moved here from Ontario.

The location is in Pringle Farm, a wonderful and quiet enclave at Salt Spring's prestigious "north end".    Sunny (s/sw/w), with expansive ocean, island, and mountain vistas, and close to beach and lake accesses (warm ocean swimming in this area!).

Triple garage, for those classic cars, too!

Warm woods, "great room" concept in living/dining, with cook's dream kitchen, deck off with outdoor kitchen/barbecue area...library/den off living, and lovely master sitting, with ensuite.

Lower (garden) development, too.

A family would be happy, here, plus a professional couple workinng from home would also appreciate these generous spaces.

Easy to show...give me a call, and let's investigate your next lifestyle!

Beautiful homes, talented builder (family enterprise!), on Salt Spring Island....

Here's a superb builder, with design flair and quality construction, that I'm happy to bring to your attention.

The interesting thing is that it's a family business, with Bruce Gamble and his sons involved in the design and execution of very fine homes.

Exceptional Elegance & Oceanview
The Pringle Farm Road gem awaits your pleasure -- wood floors, accents, custom window treatments, ocean vistas, spacious decking to expand summer living pleasures, triple care garage for those classic beauties, easy care landscaping, privacy and peaceful surround, very sunny (sunsets from here, too!)...."as new" home, and you will love the stone entry.

Seaview Pastoral Delight
The Sunset Drive property enjoys a pond feature, and has a stellar guest cottage nestled into the gently sloping pastoral landscape. The main home offers wood floors, custom accents, great kitchen, a warm family opportunity...would also suit a professional couple, working from home. This parcel is a short stroll to a beach access (warm ocean swimming in this area), and it is adjacent to significant park land....walk trails for miles, if desired!

Meet the Gambles...these new homes are ready to just move into and to enjoy, and they welcome calls on your land parcels.

Longest day of the year...Father's Day, too! Things to do on Salt Spring Island....

June 20, 2010.

Mona Fertig, of Mothertongue Press, has a book launch, today, at Lions Hall, at 8 p.m. Her 14 years of research has produced a long-awaited biography of George Fertig...his exceptional paintings and his life in the underacknowledged B.C. art scene, in mid-century Vancouver. A major solo exhibition of George Fertig's luminous paintings is currently underway at the Burnaby Art Gallery, until July 11th. This book is a part of the Unheralded Artists series, and can be ordered through Mother Tongue Press, or find at local art galleries, too. (A special thing to do on Father's Day!).

This is the final day of the exceptional Masterpiece Weekend art exhibition at ArtSpring...don't miss this. Superlative work, by 24 very different artists. Then, wander through the Ganges Village galleries, all of whom will be open for your viewing pleasure, this special weekend, too.

Live music venues, for your pleasure also, at: Moby's, Treehouse, Harbour House Hotel, Fulford Pub....the usual eclectic mix!

A classic car buff? Then this a.m/early afternoon, Qualicum Beach hosts their annual show and shine, and it truly is one of the best! A 20 minute ferry trip from Vesuvius to Crofton, and approximately one hour and fifteen minutes later, you're in Qualicum Beach (take the "new highway", all the way).

Also a day to pack a picnic, and to try some beachcombing (Vesuvius Beach, beach at end of Arbutus Road at Southey Point, trail to beach on Trincomali Channel, also reached off Southey Point Road, Beddis Beach, Drummond Children's Beach at Fulford Harbour, Ruckle Park, Mt. Maxwell Park, the Burgoyne Valley Park, anywhere along North Beach and Walker's Hook Road....enjoy!

Dine out on Father's Day, too, at: Harbour House Hotel, Moby's, Calvin's Bistro, Auntie Pesto's (yes, they are now doing Sunday dinner, through to end of August), Salt Spring Inn, Seaside Kitchen, Fulford Pub, Rock Salt Cafe...special menu items to spoil the "Dad" in your life!

Longest day of the year is with us....get out there and enjoy!

Don't forget to tune into my live radio show, tomorrow, Monday, 7 to 9 a.m. (Pacific Time), at 107.9 fm or www.cfsi-fm.com (click on "listen now", just underneath the photo on the website). Same thing on Wednesday, now, too. Thank you!
