Tumultuous times....
Earthquakes, revolutions, volcanic eruptions, mini-wars, epic floods, decimating tornados, famine, wildfires, economic distress, massive unemployment, deceitful business practices, climate change concerns, currency worries...remember the old theory that the external world mirrored the inner?
Along with all of that boil of natural and man inflicted miasma, we have a profound shift in how we perceive information.
Marshall McLuhan reminded us back in the distant 1970s that our technology changes us, as a people. He coined phrases such as: "the medium is the message", and "global village", and foretold the shift in communication that is so powerfully with us, today.
Social media have totally changed connections between people, and in a very few more years the hybrid generation will be gone, leaving only AG (After Google) people.
Maybe it would be a good idea to create a "memoir package" (in digital form, of course), so that this straddling of two worlds, that a transition period briefly allows, can be there as an interpretive map...a sort of Rosetta Stone that will explain what was, in the recent past, to those blazing along the trails of the new/now.
If my entire existence can be held on a phone or on a tablet or on whatever device is being created right now, and I can be a concrete part of a group I've never physically met, and can slide from real to virtual, all at the same moment, with the power to shoot the movie of my life and to place it on the magical mystery tour of YouTube...then suddenly there is no skin anymore...the hot-wire is myself...physical & mind & heart within & without....all at once, together.
No wonder there is a disconnect between experiences right now...it's not about age...it's about embracing the moment and jumping the digital divide.
What did Kierkegaard say? Either/Or?
Either you're in or you're out, on this one!
What does this have to do with real estate? This is just one more business model that has been totally changed by the Internet communication revolution. The car industry, travel industry, stock market side of investment, then real estate sales, and now underway, the business of education...all totally changed in how the provider connects with the consumer of the product or service. Nothing is unaffected.
Exciting times, full of upheaval and destruction...also full of change and opportunity.
What side of the divide are you on?
No middle ground. Either/Or.
As a BG (Before Google) hybrid person, I slip slide along, fitting where I can and not worrying about it when I can't. Now, that "memoir thing"...I wonder....
Hmmm...and your thoughts are? Always welcome!
