A lake...pooling towards an ocean...a rim of islands and mountains fencing the horizon...it is beautiful in the Pacific Northwest Coast, that is true. This photo is taken from the Mt. Belcher/Mt. Erskine area of Salt Spring Island, looking towards the Lower Mainland and to Vancouver. A 12 minute floatplane flight, and you're in the city! Ferries take approx. 1 hr./30 min.
Although the view will be slightly different, there are many places on Orcas Island, in the San Juans, that would have this ambiance. I always think there's a real correleation, topographically, and size-wise, between Salt Spring Island in Canada and Orcas Island in the U.S. The main town on Orcas, Eastsound, is a little smaller than Salt Spring's Ganges Village...our shopping core is more like Friday Harbor, on San Juan Island.
So close, all these alluring island gems...such a pleasure to boat between them, and to enjoy the best protected boating waters in the world (according to mariners!). It's called Juan da Fuca Strait and Georgia Strait, now, but historically it was known as the Salish Sea. That swims more enticingly, in my opinion!
