What does it mean, to say that a property is an "estate"?

What does it mean, this label, "estate style property"?

I leaf through luxury real estate print media, magazine format, and some of the amazing homes showcase marble and stellar tiles and amazing design elements and....very "splish", and almost like mini-Florentine palaces of old.

In the Pacific Northwest Coast area, the definition of "estate" might mean a private beach, such as this one, on a private island.     It might mean a home that is a blend of "west coast contemporary" and a forties "hunting lodge" ethic (a formal rustic, if that makes any sense!).    It might mean guest cottages that also harken back to that forties/fifties timeframe, when only the truly affluent could afford such retreat style island second homes.

Tennis court, dock for private yachts, caretakers accomodation...when many of these island estate properties were first developed, heli-pads were not the norm, and boats were wooden yachts of serious dimension (not fast transport, though!).

Definitions in real estate are always elastic, as they are about location, culture, timeframes.

This gem of a beach is on spectacular Pym Island, in the Canadian Southern Gulf Islands, and yes, it is for sale.
