John Donne, in the 17th Century, said it best: "never send for whom the bell tolls...it tolls for thee".
He was reminding us that we are all connected...none of us are an island unto ourselves...and in this post-internet world we are hugely spliced together in a "global village"/21st century way...yes, indeed, "no man is an island", as Donne prophesized!
The earthquake, the worst ever experienced since records kept, has just afflicted Japan. Fires with gas works, tsunamis that devastate nearby coastal areas, nuclear power plants that don't weather the quake and are emitting serious radiation...the Pacific Coast "rim", on both sides of the expansive ocean, on tsunami watch...the images that play endlessly on our t.v. and internet connections are full of the human condition...angst that is borderless.
So important to step to the plate...we all need each other...it is beyond borders, beyond cultures...it's just "us", as Cisco reminds us in all those commercials...it's the "human network".
Puts into perspective that Middle East "exclusiveness" of Islamist thought. Let's be inclusive and step forward to help our compatriots in Japan...there is no "them", only "us".
Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders...whatever works for you...we are needed, and now.
One day, it might be our turn....
