There are a lot of hiking trails on lovely Salt Spring Island...sometimes, when walking a big acreage, on a public trail, one will come across a "left over" structure, something that harks back to a much earlier time on the Island's history.
This log barn structure, clearly a stalwart construction job initially, still stands. Best guesstimates as to age? Maybe from the 1930s? Nestled into a "bowl" of land, with a natural meadow area in front, one wonders who built this lovely barn structure, was it for sheep, how long did they live here, and what happened to the main dwelling?
Unanswerable questions, unless one is lucky enough to bump into an "old Islander", someone who might know the lore, or had a relative who did know.
How quickly Nature swallows up all evidence of human habitation, if just left to itself....
Meantime, this unexpected glimpse of someone's dream, very rarely happened upon as the forest has swallowed it up, has made me think anew of the fleeting nature of time itself.
Also, what have I constructed that holds beauty and solidity, that a future walker might happen upon?
Hmmmm....pondering......
