So, change is the label for the 21st Century? Could be! Nothing is "biz as usual", that's for sure. I attended a real estate seminar for brokers, the other day, and it was very illuminating. Titled "Ninja Selling", it was given by Larry Kendall, from Colorado. So many different things resonated with me, which he discussed/brought to the fore, as the day's program progressed. For some time, now, I've felt real estate itself, as an industry, was in the middle of a total make-over, definitely post-internet. Larry reminded me of these thoughts. He outlined that real estate, when he started, in the early 70s, was "owner centric". Then, in the late 70s, and introduced by Dave Liniger, of RE/MAX, the business became "agent centric". Larry Kendall's opinion is that we are already 6 or 7 years into the current phase: "consumer centric", and the only reason it isn't more clearly seen is because of the downward pressure of market conditions, and so realtors aren't paying attention to a bigger picture. Consumer centric means that the consumer of real estate will drive the process. This could be why, then, that former "tried and true" methods, of gaining listings and buyers, no longer seem to "work". If the terrain has changed, then our responses to our careers also need to keep pace and need to change/evolve to meet the new parameters. A consumer centric model is very different from the agent centric idea. Next time you set aside some "pondering time" (you do that, don't you, so you don't just keep "reacting"?), think about what such a consumer in control business model would look like. I'm pondering right now, myself, and will share any "aha" things that come up. Thanks for listening!
