It's Harvest Time, and this weekend is the Canadian Thanksgiving Holiday celebration.
Yes, there are turbulent events in the world...wars in far off places, terrorist threats with "severe alert" status, concerns over global warming, potential for devastating climate events such as floods, earthquakes...the "ring of fire" in the Paciific region seems very active....at home, there are economic concerns, with some jobs laying people off, with the retail sector hit by buyer reluctance, with a worry about what to count on for investments that will take care of us in our later years....
Yes, it's a time of shift, when "everything" seems to be on the table...uptick, downturn, chaos, opportunity...it's all there.
Beneath all that surface agitation, though, is the deep dive moment of tradition. The family gathered at the table, the feast on display, the warmth of old recipes brought out for their annual ooh and aah moment, the tinge of regret around the edge of happiness, at those missing from the family table....
Tradition and the homage to same are something that link all cultures and all regions. For us, as Canadians, it's this October harvest moment.
Let us, then, remember the things to be thankful for: our nearest and dearest "in good order", our health, our achievements, our passions that make us get up in the morning and "go for it", our friends, our ability to think of work arounds when things are a little "sticky", our ability to help others who need it, our caring communities....
Lucky us, wherever we find ourselves in this great land, "the true north strong and free" as our anthem sings.
Enjoy your feast, and your traditions...and share with others.
