The U.S. San Juan Islands are part of the same Southern Gulf Islands chain, and they all enjoy a microclimate known as "cool Mediterranean".
The Canadian Gulf Islands are protected "preserve" areas, and are under a Provincial Government body that is there to "preserve and protect" the park-like nature of the Islands, for the benefit of all B.C. residents. This keeps the entire Islands area as a "protected investment" spot, as growth is controlled via severe zoning/density restrictions, and this Islands Trust has been in effect since the mid-1970s.
On the Canadian May holiday weekend, there's an annual Around Salt Spring Sailing Race, which gets well over a hundred sailors taking part, many of them using the event as a shakedown for their crews, in preparation for the Swiftsure Race, out of nearby Victoria, which is held every year on the U.S. Memorial Day weekend. Lots of excitement on these two back to back holiday weekends, then.
