Vote today...municipal elections in B.C.!

November 19, 2011.

Today is voting day in municipal elections throughout B.C.

On Salt Spring Island & on the majority of Gulf Islands, we are not municipalities...governed by the Islands Trust, a government mandated body created in 1974, to "preserve & protect" the environmental beauties of the Gulf Islands, for the benefit of all B.C. residents, our elections are to elect two trustees plus one CRD (Capital Regional Director) for each island.

One of the main items on Salt Spring, for some candidates, if elected, is to ask for a governance study, with a view to incorporation.

The Trust would remain in place, but there would also be an elected council, and Salt Spring would have control over its own particular island issues. This has already occurred on Bowen Island, the first Gulf Island to become a Gulf Island municipal structure.

This appears to be one of those pivotal moments in the Island's life...make sure you vote.

It's your island, too...make your voice heard!
