B.C. Civic elections in November...be informed & be sure to vote!

This is a civic election year. Although not municipalities, all Gulf Islands elect their trustees at the same time.

Along with two trustees per island, under the Islands Trust mandate (in place since 1974), there is also an elected position accountable to the CRD (Capital Regional District).

There are a number of people running for the CRD position...the incumbent is also running again.

On the Trust side, neither of the current trustees plan to run again...some people have declared their interest, and there is still time for others to state their decision to run for office.

It's going to be an interesting election (voting day in November).

Be informed...read the Driftwood Newspaper's coverage of the candidates (either in hard copy or via digital version), attend public meetings to hear the candidates in person, listen to discussions on the local community radio station...it's important to consider the issues, and yes, potential incorporation may be a part of discussions...certainly, this would start with a referendum to guage islander support for same.

Incorporation would retain the Trust and the bylaws would remain...it would be the CRD position that would be replaced by an elected council.   Is this a good idea for Salt Spring?  Perhaps...perhaps not....

Be informed...it's your Island, after all!
